AVI (Audio Video Interleave) is a multimedia format defined by Microsoft derived from the RIFF (Resource Interchange File Format) that was introduced with Windows 3.1.
AVI is the industry standard for audio/video files on MS Windows based systems.
The most important alternative to AVI is MPEG (Moving Picture Experts Group) and is, in contrast to AVI, a widely supported standard.

Streams - the various data that is nested ("interleaved") within the data structures, are saved in an AVI file.
The AVI format thereby serves only as a container - the data itself can be compressed by any number of different methods. The task of (de)compressing is done by the codec. A four character long field in the AVI's header, known as FourCC (four Character Code), indicates which format is actually found in the data.

AVI (Audio Video Interleave) ist ein von Microsoft definiertes Multimedia-Format, das von dem für Windows 3.1 eingeführten RIFF (Resource Interchange File Format) abgeleitet ist. AVI ist auf MS Windows-basierten Systemen der De-facto-Standard für Audio-/Video-Daten. Die wichtigste Alternative zu AVI stellt MPEG (Moving Picture Experts Group) dar und ist im Gegensatz zu AVI ein breit abgestützter Standard.

Bei AVI werden die unterschiedlichen Daten in ineinander verschachtelten ("interleaved") Datenstrukturen, so genannten streams abgespeichert.
Das AVI-Format bildet hierbei lediglich den Container - die Daten selbst können mittels unterschiedlicher Verfahren komprimiert sein. Die Aufgabe der (De)Komprimierung übernimmt der Codec. Die Kennzeichnung, in welchem Format die eigentlichen Daten vorliegen, steht im FourCC (Four Character Code), einem vier Zeichen Langen Feld im Header der AVI-Datei.
