What is the DIF format
The DIF format is used for saving DV codec compressed video. DIF files (.dif or .dv) can contain a video as well as up to 4 audio tracks. This format was conceived in the beginnings of DV video processing on PC. In contrast to AVI or QuickTime files, which can use the DV codec as well as a number of other codecs, the DIF format uses exclusively the DV codec.

Das DIF-Format wird zur Speicherung von mittels eines DV-Codecs komprimierten Video verwendet. DIF-Dateien (.dif oder auch .dv) können eine Video- und bis zu vier Audio-Spuren enthalten. In den Anfängen der Videonachbereitung von DV-Video auf dem PC wurde dieses Format entwickelt. Im Gegensatz zu AVI- oder QuickTime-Dateien, die neben dem DV-Codec auch eine Vielzahl anderer Codecs verwenden können, ist das DIF-Format auf einen DV-Codec festgelegt.
