What is the IMX format?
IMX is a VTR (Video Tape Recorder) format that records a digital components signal according to the standard 4:2:2 with 8 bit quantization. The data reduction works according to a special variant of the MPEG2 process, the so-called 422P@MP, I-Frames only method, that uses a GOP from a picture. IMX is therefore completely cuttable. A net video data transfer rate of 50 MBit per second can be achieved using data reduction factor of 3.3:1. This allows the possibilty of 10 generations without visible loss. The format can also process 8 channels of 16bit or 4 channels of 24bit PCM audio. The recording is done on small or large cassettes with a tapewidth of ½" and a maximum play time of 73 or 220 minutes. Copying between 2 IMX machines can be adjusted for lessened realtime. Depending on the type of IMX machine, some unitsa are capable of playback of analog format Betacam SP and Betacam and the digital format Digital Betacam and Betacam SX. The format was introduced in 2000 and is in use at most of the German broadcast facilities.
